John Koblas

Three new books were published by Minneapolis area author John Koblas in 2003. Robbers of the Rails: The Sontag Boys of Minnesota, released in July, chronicles the criminal activities of two Mankato outlaws in the early 1890s, and follows their bloody trail of mayhem and murder from Minnesota and Wisconsin to California. The Swamp Fox & the Columbine, Koblas’ second book on Confederate guerrilla fighter J. J. Dickison focuses upon the blowing up of the Federal gunboat, COLUMBINE. The third new volume, H. V. Jones: A Newspaperman’s Imprint on Minneapolis History, documents the life of the owner/editor of THE MINNEAPOLIS JOURNAL, friend of President Theodore Roosevelt, and American icon. The book is actually a history of Minneapolis as well as the United States as seen through the eyes of the Journal, and the final chapter presents a collection of correspondence between Jones and Roosevelt. Last year Koblas produced two new books on the James-Younger Gang, the fourth and fifth in a series. When the Heavens Fell: the Youngers in Stillwater Prison and The Great Cole Younger & Frank James Historical Wild West Show were published August 1. One reviewer, having read the books in manuscript form, has hailed Koblas as “the leading authority on the invincible gang.” The year 2001 also witnessed two new Jesse James books by Koblas. Jesse James Ate Here: An Outlaw Tour of Minnesota, was published in May by North Star Press. The volume focuses upon Minnesota communities visited by the James-Younger Gang, plus others where they may have been and a few where only legend mistakenly claims they stopped. The Northfield Historical Society Press published the third in the series, Faithful onto Death, The James-Younger Raid on the First National Bank, which the WALL STREET JOURNAL and TRUE WEST MAGAZINE hailed as “the definitive Northfield raid book.” Released in September, this coffee table sized book commemorates the 125th anniversary of the raid and has been issued as a souvenir edition in conjunction with the robbery. Unlike most other volumes on the subject, this book focuses upon the defeat of the gang by courageous Minnesotans and why the robbery took place. Included are never before published materials from the vaults of Northfield. In 1999, Koblas’ successful volume, The Jesse James Northfield Raid: Confessions of the Ninth Man, first in the trilogy, was released by North Star Press. This book, available in both hard and soft cover, is the product of sixteen years of research on the part of the author. Koblas chronicles the 1876 robbery attempt through an in-depth study and offers new information about the possibility of a ninth robber guarding the escape route at the edge of town. A one-hour documentary movie, based on Mr. Koblas’ book, was filmed during summer and fall of 2000. The project, aiming at a television audience, was filmed by Director Derk Hansen at several selected sites throughout south central Minnesota and western Wisconsin. This film is currently being expanded to a 90 minute or possibly two-hour presentation. Filming was concluded in October 2002. John Koblas also authored two new books from North Star Press in 2000: Willow River Almanac and J.J. Dickison: Swamp Fox of the Confederacy. “Willow” chronicles the author’s own pain while going through a divorce and leads him on a Thoreau-like odyssey to heal in a Wisconsin State Park. “Dickison,” on the other hand, is a well-researched study of a colorful, but little known, Civil War hero. Additionally, Koblas is the author and/or editor of six books on the lives of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Sinclair Lewis. A recent book, F. Scott Fitzgerald in Minnesota:Toward the Summit, was a 1996 Minnesota Book Award nominee. Other works include: F. Scott Fitzgerald in Minnesota: His Homes and Haunts, Minnesota Historical Society Press, 1978; Sinclair Lewis: Home at Last, Voyageur Press, 1981; Selected Letters of Sin
clai
r Lewis; Sinclair Lewis
& Mantrap: The Saskatchewan Trip; and Sinclair Lewis: Final Voyage; 1985. A decade ago, Mr. Koblas’ work was featured on a national television segment of Good Morning America. In 1985, he was a guest of Charles Kuralt on CBS Sunday Morning in New York for the Sinclair Lewis Centenary. That same year, Koblas was chosen by the Postmaster General in Washington to present the Sinclair Lewis Stamp at its First Day of Issue Ceremony. The following year, he received an award from the governor of Minnesota for his Fitzgerald work at the Minnesota Walk of Fame dedication. In addition to biographical endeavors, Koblas has been a visiting instructor of writing at Brevard College in North Carolina, feature writer for the Daytona Beach (Florida) News-Journal, and author of a syndicated column for Columbia Features, which was carried in 105 newspapers nationwide. He is the author of more than 500 short stories, articles and verse published worldwide. Recently, Mr. Koblas, taught courses on Fitzgerald and Lewis at the Elder Learning Center of the University of Minnesota and Elder Hostel sessions. Four new books by the prolific author will be issued later this year by North Star Press: The Outpost & Other Strange Tales, a collection of 24 macabre stories; Peril at Pig’s-Eye Cave, a history/mystery novel for children; Let Them Eat Grass: The 1862 Sioux Uprising, a thousand-plus page volume on an American tragedy, and Bushwhacker! Cole Younger in the Kansas-Missouri Border War, documenting Younger’s involvement in the Civil War.

Renegade

|
My birth name is Jefferson Alan. I lived through the Souix uprising in Minnesota, survived the Civil War in Missouri as a Bushwacker, almost died by a Ranger's slug in Texas, and became a brother to an Apache in Arizona. He gave me the name Renegade. He taught me about the spirits of the Sun, Earth, Water, and Ancestors. He gave me a new life.
Old West Educator, Western Historian, Cowboy Horseman, and Reenactor of the Old west.
I'm an Old West Historian. I've studied, and performed re-enactments of some of the most famous lawmen, and outlaws that rode through the years 1866 thru 1899. I like to teach folks the cowboy way of life, and the code, honor and integrity. You'll learn some history, then learn how to throw a lariat, and possibly learn how to crack a bull whip.
